A man has been charged with DUI and remains in critical condition following a rollover crash that left another man dead and a woman seriously injured early Sunday morning near Woodstock.
The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 2:03 a.m. Sunday to Charles Road west of Queen Anne Road in Greenwood Township, which is just outside of Woodstock, for a single-vehicle crash.
McHenry County Sheriff Deputy Sandra Rogers said that a 2019 Toyota Camry was traveling westbound on Charles Road when it drove off the north side of the roadway for unknown reasons.
The Toyota then struck a pole and a tree before rolling over onto its side, Rogers said.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said that Shawn Brautigam, 32, of Wheaton, was driving the Toyota and was flown by a Flight For Life helicopter to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he remains in critical condition.
A 34-year-old Woodstock man, who was one of the passengers, was ejected from the car and transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital. He was transferred by a Flight For Life helicopter to Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford where he was later pronounced dead.
The second passenger in the vehicle, a 44-year-old Wheaton woman, was flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center by a Flight For Life helicopter where she remains in serious condition.
Brautigam, who was the only one in the car wearing a seatbelt, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and issued a notice to appear, the sheriff’s office said.
Airbags deployed in the vehicle and the investigation continues by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and Winnebago County Coroner’s Office.
