Two Waukegan men, both 26 years old, were killed after their car struck a tree in Winthrop Harbor early Saturday morning, officials said.

The Winthrop Harbor Fire Department and Winthrop Harbor Police Department responded around 3:15 a.m. Saturday to 12th Street and Lewis Avenue for a report of a single-vehicle crash with injuries.

Emergency crews found a single-vehicle with two occupants inside that had struck a tree. Both occupants were trapped in the car and firefighters had to extricate them.

Shawn Smith, 26, of Waukegan, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Clifton Johnson, 26, of Waukegan, was transported by ambulance to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where he was also later pronounced dead.

Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper said that autopsies were performed Monday on Smith and Johnson. Both died of blunt force injuries received from the crash and toxicology results are pending, Cooper said.
