A 56-year-old man was critically injured after being ejected from his ATV when it rolled over several times in unincorporated Zion Sunday afternoon, police said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Winthrop Harbor Fire Department responded around 3:03 p.m. Sunday to the 9700 block of 17th Street in unincorporated Zion for an ATV accident.

The 56-year-old Zion man, who was the only one involved in the crash, was traveling westbound when his ATV left the roadway to the north for an unknown reason and struck an embankment, according to Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli.

The ATV rolled over several times and the man suffered serious head injuries after being ejected from it, Covelli said. Paramedics found the man unconscious and not breathing at the scene.

A Flight For Life medical helicopter was called to land at Village Park on 9th Street in Winthrop Harbor but was later cancelled.

Paramedics transported the man by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in critical condition.
