A 15-year-old Waukegan girl struck by an SUV in Waukegan has died in the hospital several weeks after the crash, the medical examiner said.
The Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department responded around 6:35 a.m. November 21 to Belvidere Road and Keller Avenue for a report of a pedestrian struck by a car.
Police officers arrived and found the girl, identified as Ania Jennings, 15, of Waukegan, seriously injured after being struck by a mid-size Jeep SUV, police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said.
Paramedics transported Ania by ambulance to an area hospital where she was listed in critical condition, according to Waukegan Fire Department Spokesman Steve Lenzi.
Ania was pronounced dead around 3 p.m. Monday at a hospital in Cook County, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, who ruled her death an accident.
Waukegan Police Department Commander Joe Florip said the driver of the Jeep remained at the scene and was being cooperative with the Police Department’s Traffic Division, who responded to the scene to conduct the accident investigation.
A witness told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that she and the car in front of her swerved out of the way immediately following the collision in order to avoid running over the girl who was injured in the street.
The crash remains under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department.
