Two people were killed and another was critically injured and flown to the hospital after a three-vehicle crash near Lake Villa Thursday evening, police said.

The Lake Villa Fire Protection District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 5:20 p.m. Thursday to the 39300 block of North Route 59 in unincorporated Lake Villa for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli said that a vehicle was traveling northbound when it rolled over onto its side and then was struck by a southbound vehicle. A third vehicle was also involved in the crash.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, Covelli said. A Flight For Life medical helicopter transported one of the victims to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

Three others were transported by ambulance to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Route 59 has been closed for four hours following the crash.
