A Tesla SUV caught on fire after a head-on crash in Barrington that shutdown part of Northwest Highway for over an hour Wednesday morning, fire officials said.

The Barrington Fire Department and Barrington Police Department responded around 7 a.m. to Northwest Highway and Lake Zurich Road for a two-vehicle accident.

Firefighters arrived and found a 2020 Tesla Model X SUV and 2017 Subaru Legacy sedan involved in the crash. The Tesla caught on fire and firefighters had to use fire retardant foam to extinguish it.

The Barrington Police Department cited the driver of the Tesla for improper lane usage after they said he went into oncoming lanes, striking the westbound Subaru.

The drivers of both vehicles were uninjured and they were both the only occupants in their cars.

Both directions of Northwest Highway were impacted due to the crash and lanes were closed for around an hour.
