An 82-year-old man was killed and a 20-year-old man was seriously injured after a head-on crash on Route 12 in Volo Monday evening, police said.

The Wauconda Fire Protection District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 5:50 p.m. Monday to Route 12 and Volo Village Road for a report of a three-vehicle crash with injuries.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said that a 1995 Mazda convertible, driven by an 82-year-old Lake Zurich man, was traveling southbound on Route 12 when it crossed over into the northbound lanes.

Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli said that the Mazda struck a northbound 2005 Toyota sedan, driven by a 20-year-old Lake in the Hills man.

The Toyota rotated into the path of a southbound 2008 Subaru SUV, driven by a 27-year-old McHenry man, causing the Subaru to become involved in the crash as well.

Later at the scene, an auxiliary deputy blocking traffic had his squad car struck by another vehicle. The deputy suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and an autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday on the 82-year-old man.
