A 44-year-old man was killed following a single-vehicle crash outside of Woodstock Friday and the driver, who was seriously injured, has been charged with driving under the influence.

The Woodstock Fire Rescue District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 1:07 p.m. Friday to the 16700 block of Nelson Road in unincorporated Woodstock for a vehicle crash.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said that a 2009 Mitsubishi Galant was traveling westbound on Nelson Road when it drove into the eastbound lane of traffic and then left the roadway to the south, where it struck a tree east of Deep Cut Road.

The vehicle was driven by Shannon Velmont, 45, of Wonder Lake, who suffered serious injuries. A 44-year-old Capron man sitting in the passenger seat was pronounced dead at the scene.

Velmont had to be extricated from the vehicle by firefighters and flown by a Flight For Life medical helicopter to Javon Bea Hospital-Riverside in Rockford. Sheriff’s officials said that seat belts were worn by both occupants and airbags deployed.

Velmont was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving on a revoked driver’s license, and operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. She is scheduled to appear in court on January 14.

The crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Coroner’s Office and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit.
