A six-vehicle crash with numerous injuries has left Route 45 in Libertyville shut down for hours while the Major Crash Assistance Team investigates, officials said.

The Libertyville Police Department and Libertyville Fire Department responded around 7:40 a.m. Thursday to Route 45 north of Peterson Road for a six-vehicle crash with injuries.

A Lake County sheriff’s deputy was the first to come upon the scene, according to Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli.

At least one person had to be extricated from their vehicle by firefighters, Covelli said. The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to bring a minimum of five ambulances to the scene.

It is unknown how many people were injured. The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was called to the scene due to the severity of the crash.

Route 45 remains closed from Peterson Road to Casey Road as of 11:30 a.m. while officers complete accident reconstruction and investigation.

The Libertyville Police Department was not immediately for comment on the incident.
