Jane Korzun, 52, of Round Lake.

A Round Lake woman has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of a 3-month-old baby boy at her home day care, which police described as a ‘neglectful environment’ with ‘abusive practices.’

Jane Korzun, 52, of the 300 block of West Savoy Drive in Round Lake, was charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter, four counts of endangering the life or health of a child, five counts of unlawful restraint and five counts of unlawful operation of a child care center.

The Round Lake Police Department and Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded around 3:38 p.m. August 9 to Korzun’s home for a 911 call of a child not breathing.

Officers discovered a 3-month-old baby who was staying at the home, which was a home child day care business, according to the Round Lake Police Department.

Officers attempted life-saving measures and paramedics transported the boy to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he was pronounced dead.

A thorough investigation was conducted, which included detectives interviewing children and family members along with reviewing hundreds of hours of surveillance video.

The investigation revealed a “neglectful environment and abusive practices” at the day care, Round Lake police said. The Lake County Coroner’s Office ruled the death a homicide due to asphyxiation in an unsafe sleeping environment.

The 3-month-old was identified in court records as Jaspen W. Lothson. He died after Korzun swaddled him in a blanket with his arms pinned behind his back and laid him on his side, according to a grand jury indictment.

Galyna Zaytseva, 60, of Fox Lake, was also charged following an investigation into Jane Child Care, Inc. by Round Lake police.

Galyna Zaytseva, 60, of the 400 block of Blue Springs Drive in Fox Lake, who also worked at the day care, was charged with aggravated battery, endangering the life or health of a child, unlawful restraint and unlawful operation of a child care center.

Zaytseva is accused of physically striking children at the day care on separate occasions, and in one instance, physically restraining a child for an extensive period with the help of Korzun, according to a grand jury indictment.

A warrant was issued on December 16 and Korzun, who owns Jane’s Child Care, Inc., turned herself in to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office on December 19. Her bond was set at $750,000 and she was released after posting $75,000.

A warrant was also issued for Zaytseva, who was released after posting $50,000, or 10 percent, of her $500,000 bond. Korzun and Zaytseva are both scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning.
