A man who shot and killed himself at a park prompted a lockdown and search of Highland Park Hospital after there was a simultaneous report of a person with a gun in the area Monday afternoon.
The Highland Park Police Department and Highland Park Fire Department responded around 2:40 p.m. Monday to the 700 block of Park Avenue West for a gunshot victim in Sunset Woods Park.
The City of Highland Park said that officers located the victim with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead.
Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the death appears to be a suicide and confirmed that the victim was a male.
Highland Park city officials said that Highland Park Hospital staff received information of a possible person with a gun in the area around the same time. The hospital was placed on lockdown and a police search of the facility and surrounding area was conducted.
The facility and area were cleared of any threat and police determined that the person with a gun was related to the suicide victim located at Sunset Woods Park.
“The Police Department has determined that there is no current threat to the community. Highland Park Hospital is no longer under lockdown. The City shares condolences with the family of the deceased,” city officials said Monday afternoon.
