A 40-year-old Antioch man died after his snowmobile went through the water on Loon Lake in unincorporated Antioch Sunday evening.
The Antioch Fire Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 11 p.m. Sunday to the 22900 block of West Lakeshore Drive in unincorporated Antioch for a report of a snowmobile that went through the water.
Antioch Fire Chief Jon Cokefair said that the victim was driving a snowmobile on the ice on West Loon Lake when it plunged into an open area of the water that was not believed to be covered in ice.
Divers and boats from several fire departments responded to the scene to assist with the rescue. Divers located the man approximately 30 minutes after receiving the 911 call.
Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper confirmed the victim was a 40-year-old Antioch man. The man was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday afternoon on the man, whose name has not yet been released, Cooper said.
Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli said that the snowmobile was located 50-75 yards southwest of the lake’s seawall.
The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police Department and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
