Matthew R. Reder, 24, of McHenry.

A man who was wanted on child sexual assault and child pornography charges barricaded himself inside a Crystal Lake apartment after threatening officers with a knife, leading to a several-hour long standoff.

Matthew R. Reder, 24, of McHenry, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, criminal trespass to building, criminal damage to property, resisting a peace officer and aggravated assault of a peace officer.

The Crystal Lake Police Department responded around 4:29 p.m. Friday to the 500 block of Darlington Lane for a report of a burglary in progress.

Officers arrived on scene and met with a man, later identified as Reder, inside the residence who threatened officers with a knife and immediately barricaded himself inside the bathroom.

“Officers set up a perimeter on the residence and continued to talk with the armed subject in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. Additional police units were called to the scene to assist with the incident,” Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Thomas Kotlowski said.

He also had an active arrest warrant out of Naperville for possession of methamphetamine and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kotlowski said that the standoff was an isolated incident believed to be related to a domestic situation. There were no injuries reported.

The Cary Police Department, Algonquin Police Department, Lake in the Hills Police Department, Oakwood Hills Police Department and SWAT officers from the Northern Illinois Police Alarm Service assisted at the scene.

Reder remains held in the McHenry County Jail on a $520,000 bond.
