Schools are on soft lockdown and streets are closed due to heavy police activity after a person barricaded themselves inside a home in Waukegan.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said that Washington Street between Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Jackson Street is closed due to the incident.

Officials said that area schools are on soft lockdown, including Waukegan High School Washington Campus, Abbott Middle School, Juarez Middle School and Career Academy AOEC, as a precaution.

Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli said that the incident is “very active” and officers are working on establishing communications and negotiating with the subject.

The immediate surrounding area is not believed to be in danger as the situation is confined to the home, Covelli told Lake and McHenry County Scanner. No additional information was immediately available.
