Police are searching for two men who pretended to be potential buyers of a car that was for sale and then stole the car at gunpoint during a test drive near Wadsworth.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 3:45 p.m. March 7 to the Citgo in the 16400 block of West Russell Road in Wadsworth for an armed robbery victim.
Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that a 33-year-old man was robbed while attempting to sell his vehicle.
The victim listed his vehicle for sale on Craigslist and was contacted by someone who he believed to be an interested buyer, Covelli said.
The victim met with two men who were the potential buyers in the parking lot of Gurnee Mills mall in Gurnee.
“The buyers turned out to be the offenders. The โbuyersโ wished to go on a test drive, and the victim complied,” Covelli said. During the test drive, the offenders both pulled out guns and pointed them at the victim.
The offenders stole jewelry and electronics from the victim and then forced him out of his vehicle on Russel Road over the I-94 bridge near Wadsworth, Covelli said. The victim walked to the gas station nearby and called 911.
Lake County sheriffโs detectives are working to identify the two suspects.
