An abandoned barn was completely destroyed after it became fully engulfed in flames Sunday afternoon in unincorporated Crystal Lake.

The Nunda Rural Fire Protection District responded around 3:30 p.m. Sunday to the 2000 block of Route 176 in unincorporated Crystal Lake for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived to find a fully engulfed barn on fire on a property along Route 176 between Blossom Street and Bayview Beach Road in Nunda Township.

The fire caused a heavy column of smoke to be seen nearby. No animals were inside the barn and no injuries were reported.

No fire hydrants were nearby so firefighters had to use several water tanker trucks to shuttle water to the fire.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office reopened Route 176 to vehicle traffic by around 6 p.m.

Over a dozen fire departments from Lake and McHenry counties responded to the scene. A cause of the fire was not immediately released.
