A 73-year-old man was injured after he accidentally shot himself while trying to holster a gun at a gun shop in Marengo Thursday morning.

The Marengo Police Department and Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts responded around 11 a.m. Thursday to Marengo Guns, 20014 East Grant Highway for a report of a person shot.

Officers located a 73-year-old man, who was a customer of the store, with a minor wound after a gun discharged, police said.

Marengo Police Department Public Information Officer Andrew Kjellgren said that the man, identified as Randolph Illg, was attempting to holster the firearm when he accidentally discharged it, striking himself in the hand.

It is believed that the wound was a graze wound and did not penetrate into the man’s hand, Kjellgren said. Paramedics transported Illg with non-life-threatening injuries to a local hospital for treatment.

Officers issued Illg, who lives in the 17000 block of Kunde Road in Union, an ordinance violation for discharge of firearm.
