An elderly Waukegan woman died following a head-on crash in Waukegan on Saturday, police said.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 6 p.m. Saturday to Lewis Avenue and Laurel Avenue for a report of a vehicle crash.

Officers located a two-vehicle crash and due to the severity, they requested the Waukegan Police Departmentโ€™s Major Crash Unit (MCU) to investigate, according to Waukegan Police Commander Joe Florip.

Investigators believe that a red Honda SUV was traveling northbound on Lewis Avenue at Laurel Avenue when it crossed into the southbound lanes.

The Honda struck a red Chevrolet SUV which was traveling southbound. The driver of the Honda was transported by ambulance to a local hospital and pronounced dead, Florip said.

Police said that the driver of the Honda was a Waukegan woman in her 80s. Her identity is being withheld until an autopsy and proper family notification has been completed.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office scheduled the autopsy on the woman for Monday afternoon.
