Police are investigating after a 21-year-old woman was seriously injured after being shot in Zion early Sunday morning.

The Zion Police Department responded shortly before 4:30 a.m. Sunday to the emergency room at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.

Officers met with the ER staff and learned that a 21-year-old Zion woman was brought to the hospital after suffering a single gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Officers learned that the shooting took place outside in the 2300 block of Jethro Avenue in Zion. Officers and detectives are now collecting evidence, Zion police said in a statement Sunday morning.

The woman’s injuries are considered serious, police said. It is unknown if any suspects are in custody.
