A Round Lake Beach man was killed following a high-speed crash that left his vehicle wrapped around a pole in Wadsworth, authorities said.

Jonathan Lechuga, 24, of Round Lake Beach, died of multiple traumatic injuries due to a vehicle crash, Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper told Lake and McHenry County Scanner.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Newport Fire Protection District responded around 7 a.m. April 25 to Wadsworth Road and Delany Road in Wadsworth for a traffic crash with injuries.

Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli said that deputies found a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am with extensive damage.

Sheriff’s deputies determined the vehicle was occupied by only the male driver, identified as Lechuga, who was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

A preliminary investigation shows the Pontiac was traveling westbound on Wadsworth Road approaching Delany Road at a high rate of speed, Covelli said.

The driver of the Pontiac lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway to the north. The Pontiac likely rolled over before striking a traffic signal pole at the intersection.

Due to the speed, the Pontiac wrapped around the traffic signal, Covelli said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
