Crystal Lake Mayor Aaron Shepley, who served as the mayor for over 20 years, died unexpectedly overnight, officials said.

Shepley, 56, of Crystal Lake, passed away overnight, sources and McHenry County Interim Coroner John Miller confirmed to Lake and McHenry County Scanner on Monday.

A cause and manner of death has not been determined yet, Miller said, adding that there was nothing suspicious about his death. An autopsy is being scheduled.

Shepley was elected in 1999 and served 21 years as mayor of Crystal Lake. He also served as President of Centegra Insurance Services and led the corporate legal and risk departments as General Counsel.

He also served for two years as Crystal Lake City Council member from 1997 to 1999.

“As the City’s longest serving Mayor, he impacted the community with a positive and empowering message. Mayor Shepley championed a united City Council, working together for one purpose and vision: to make Crystal Lake a great place to live,” the City of Crystal Lake said in a statement.

“Mayor Shepley loved Crystal Lake and was a strong advocate for our community. We celebrate his life and trust that his legacy will inspire all residents and businesses to serve their community. The City of Crystal Lake extends our deepest condolences to his family during this difficult time,” Crystal Lake officials added.

Shepley was one of the founding members of the Crystal Lake Strikers, a drumline that has performed on TV and marched in local parades.

“A long history with us here at Star from his work with the Strikers. His passion for photography. Of course, love for his family and friends. We are shocked and saddened like so many others,” McHenry County radio station Star 105.5 said.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to Crystal Lake Mayor Aaron Shepleys family. His accomplishments, in over 20 years of service to the city, will remain with us for a long time to come,” Mike Buehler, a candidate for the McHenry County board chairman, said.
