A North Chicago man was charged after he allegedly broke down an office door at a Beach Park motel, held down a woman and attacked her, police said.
Alkefe D. Patterson, 46, of the 3000 block of 18th Street in North Chicago, was charged with burglary, theft between $500-$10,000, unlawful restraint, criminal damage to property, criminal trespass to residence, battery and battery causing bodily harm.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call for a report of a man with a gun around 1:20 a.m. May 1 at the American Inn Motel, 39018 North Sheridan Road in Beach Park.
The first sheriff’s deputy responding arrived within seconds because he happened to be at a business across the street, according to Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli.
The deputy entered the motel and heard people screaming. He also noticed the metal door protecting the motel office had been forced open.
The motel owner’s wife was speaking to Patterson at the customer service counter when she became fearful based on the man’s tone and demeanor, Covelli said.
The woman retreated from the customer counter into her home, which is a room at the motel. Patterson broke down the victim’s door and held her down before attacking and battering her, Covelli said.
Patterson was at the hotel earlier in the evening visiting a guest in a separate room. Police said it’s unclear what led him to attack the woman.
Deputies did not find a gun on the man, despite the 911 call saying he had one.
Patterson remains held in the Lake County Jail on a $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court again on May 13.
