A Waukegan man was charged with aggravated battery after he allegedly caused serious brain and spinal injuries to a child under the age of 13.
Brandon L. Cortez, 27, of the 1000 block of North Butrick Street in Waukegan, was charged with one count of aggravated battery to a child under 13 causing permanent disability, a Class X felony.
Court documents filed in Lake County Circuit Court and obtained by Lake and McHenry County Scanner allege that Cortez knowingly caused great bodily harm to a boy under the age of 13.
Cortez caused the juvenile to sustain bruising to his body, subdural hemorrhaging, retinal hemorrhaging and a spinal fracture, the documents say.
The incident occurred on February 26. A Lake County judge signed an arrest warrant for Cortez on May 8.
The Waukegan Police Department arrested Cortez on Wednesday and he remains held in the Lake County Jail. Police have not released any further details on the incident.
Cortez is being held on a $500,000 bond, meaning he must post $50,000 in bail to be released. He is scheduled to appear for an attorney status hearing on May 19.
