A fire that started in an attached garage spread through a home in unincorporated Woodstock and left it uninhabitable Saturday morning, fire officials said.

The Marengo Fire Protection District responded around 11:11 a.m. Saturday to the 17100 block of Garden Valley Road in Woodstock for a report of a structure fire.

Fire crews arrived and found heavy flames and smoke coming through the roof of a one-story residential home, according to Battalion Chief Don Davidson.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was utilized to bring additional area fire departments to assist at the scene.

Two fire crews were sent in to extinguish the fire, which had traveled through the attic quickly, Davidson said, adding that the fire had been burning for quite a while.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the bulk of the fire within 20 minutes and began extinguishing hot spots. Two occupants were able to escape the house safely.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the residents after the home was deemed uninhabitable, Davidson said. No injuries were reported.
