A man died after shots were fired near a Walgreens in Mundelein Thursday afternoon, police said.

The Mundelein Police Department and Mundelein Fire Department responded around 12:55 p.m. Thursday to the area of Route 45 and Hawley Street for a report of a shooting.

Officers arrived and found a person shot in a parking lot near the Walgreens. The victim suffered life-threatening wounds and was pronounced dead at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Mundelein police said the shooting was an “isolated incident” involving a small group of people. It was not a random act.

The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force and numerous police departments responded to the scene. Heavy police activity was seen at the intersection Hawley Street and Seymour Avenue and Route 45 and Hawley Street as officers investigated.

Mundelein police said that officers were not involved in the shooting despite rumors on social media. The shooter has not been arrested yet and police continue to search for them.

“The suspect was initially inside of a vehicle before exiting the passenger side and shooting the victim. After the shooting, the suspect fled on foot and the driver of the vehicle fled in the vehicle,” police said in a statement.

Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper said that an autopsy is being scheduled on the victim, whose identity is being withheld pending notification to their next of kin.
