
A 74-year-old was hospitalized after he shot himself while attempting to load a handgun in unincorporated Crystal Lake Monday afternoon.
The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 12:40 p.m. Monday to the 5800 block of Marietta Drive in unincorporated Crystal Lake for a gunshot victim.
McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Sandra Rogers said that the 74-year-old man was loading his legally owned semi-automatic handgun inside his home.
The gun discharged and a bullet struck his left leg. The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department transported him by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital for treatment.
The man’s injuries are considered non-life-threatening.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is not bringing any citations or charges against the man and the incident is not considered suspicious, Rogers said.
