A 21-year-old man who was fatally shot in front of his home in unincorporated Gurnee last week has been identified.
An autopsy showed that Elliot Jones, 21, of Gurnee, died as a result of injuries sustained from a gunshot wound, according to Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 9:50 p.m. Friday to the 36900 block of North Grandwood Drive in unincorporated Gurnee for a report of a person shot.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene and located Jones, who lives on the block, with at least one gunshot wound to his body.
The man was unresponsive and sheriff’s deputies attempted lifesaving efforts on him before paramedics arrived. Paramedics transported the man to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he was later pronounced dead.
A preliminary investigation shows Jones met with another person near the roadway close to Jones’ residence, according to Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli.
The person the victim met with then fired shots at the victim and fled from the scene. Jones was likely acquainted with the offender and this was not a random act, Covelli said.
On Tuesday, Covelli said that the shooter has not been arrested yet but detectives are making progress in the case.
The shooting remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division.
