A 48-year-old man has been charged after police say he struck a pedestrian and the Meijer store with his vehicle in McHenry before fleeing the scene Tuesday.
John K. Petko, 48, of McHenry, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury and failure to report an accident.
The McHenry Township Fire Protection District and McHenry Police Department responded around 12:58 p.m. Tuesday to the Meijer grocery store, 2253 North Richmond Road, for a report of a vehicle crash.
McHenry Police Department Public Affairs Officer Patrick Polidori said that officers arrived and located a 60-year-old man who had been struck by a vehicle.
The vehicle also struck the building near the north entrance before fleeing the scene.
The victim, who sustained injuries to his leg, was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers continued to check the area and located the suspect vehicle, a white 2011 Ford Taurus, in the parking lot of Petersen Park, Polidori said. Witnesses at the park told officers that the suspect fled from his vehicle southbound near the Prairie Trail bike path.
Officers continued to search the area and ultimately located the suspect, identified as Petko, on foot near the 4200 block of West Elm Street.
The suspect was taken into custody without incident and transported to the McHenry Police Department.
Petko was later transported to the McHenry County Jail where he remains held pending a bond hearing Wednesday morning.
