A 56-year-old man was found dead near the Fox Lake Metra station Sunday afternoon after apparently being struck by a train, officials said.

The Fox Lake Fire Protection District, Metra Police Department and Fox Lake Police Department responded around 1 p.m. Sunday to the area of Nippersink Boulevard and Grand Avenue for a report of a person down call.

Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that officers located a body adjacent to the tracks.

It appears that a train on the Milwaukee District North Line struck the man and continued on without realizing it, Reile said, adding that officials are still working to confirm that the man was actually struck by the train.

A different train passing by saw the body and called it in, Reile said.

Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper said that the body was identified as a 56-year-old Fox Lake resident. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene by 1:14 p.m.

Cooper said that evidence at the scene near the Fox Lake Metra station indicates the death was a suicide.

Metra police are still reviewing surveillance camera footage and conducting an investigation. An autopsy will be performed on the man on Tuesday.
