A fire that spread from the deck of a Lake Zurich home caused significant damage to the structure and left it uninhabitable early Saturday morning.

The Lake Zurich Fire Department responded around 3:20 a.m. Saturday to the 500 block of Carolian Drive in Lake Zurich for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived in just over three minutes and found a two-story single-family residence with an attached wooden deck on fire in the rear of the home.

Lake Zurich Fire Chief John Malcolm said that the fire extended into the first and second floors along with the attic space.

The residents were alerted by their working smoke detectors and were able to evacuate the home safely.

Firefighters deployed hose lines and had the fire under control within 25 minutes of the initial 911 call. The home suffered significant damage and is uninhabitable, Malcolm said.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters from Barrington, Barrington-Countryside, Buffalo Grove, Fox Lake, Grayslake, Long Grove, Wauconda and Wheeling fire departments also responded.

“The Lake Zurich Fire Department would like to remind residents of the importance to have working smoke detectors and to make an escape plan and practice it,” Malcom said in a statement.
