A man has been charged with DUI after he struck an elderly woman with his truck and seriously injured her while the two were doing yard work at a home near Woodstock.
The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 5:12 p.m. Saturday to the 9600 block of Barber Lane in Greenwood Township, which is northeast of Woodstock.
McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Sandra Rogers said that deputies were called to a residence for a report of a single-vehicle accident.
The crash involved a 2002 Ford Ranger pickup truck. The driver, John J. Aavang, 61, of Woodstock, was using the Ford to pull tree stumps out of the ground, Rogers said.
He was backing the truck down a ditch when he lost control, striking an 87-year-old Woodstock woman who was helping him.
A LifeNet medical helicopter was called and landed in the parking lot of nearby Greenwood Elementary School.
The woman was flown by the helicopter to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious injuries. Her current condition is not known.
Aavang was found to be operating the vehicle while his blood alcohol content was over the .08 legal limit. He was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
