An SUV caught fire and spread to the garage of a home in Kildeer, causing significant damage and leaving the residence uninhabitable Monday evening.
The Lake Zurich Fire Department responded around 10:17 p.m. Monday to the 21200 block of West Brandon Road in Kildeer for a report of a structure fire.
Firefighters arrived at the scene within five minutes and found a large SUV on fire in the driveway, according to Lake Zurich Fire Chief John Malcom.
The vehicle was heavily involved in fire and fire was extending to the attached garage of a large two-story single-family residence.
The residents were able to escape the house without injury. Firefighters quickly deployed hose lines and had the fire under control in 35 minutes, Malcom said.
Malcolm said that the home, which is in an area that does not have fire hydrants, suffered significant damage and is uninhabitable.
The damage was estimated to be approximately $100,000 and firefighters were able to prevent the loss of over $350,000.
The cause of the blaze appears to have been a mechanical failure in the SUV that ignited the initial fire.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was utilized and firefighters from Long Grove, Barrington, Barrington-Countryside, Wauconda, Gurnee, Deerfield, Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Deerfield, Rolling Meadows, Wheeling, Cary, Lincolnshire, Fox River Grove, Nunda, Crystal Lake, Huntley and Palatine-Rural fire departments responded to assist.
