A father and son were killed after their vehicle rolled over several times and caught fire on Interstate 90 near Marengo on Monday, state police said.

The Illinois State Police and Hampshire Fire Protection District responded around 10:59 p.m. Monday to Interstate 90 near mile marker 39 in McHenry County for a vehicle crash.

State Police said that a preliminary investigation shows a black 2007 Pontiac was traveling westbound on Interstate 90.

For unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway and rolled over several times.

The driver and passenger were both ejected from the car, which had caught on fire, ISP said. Both occupants sustained serious injuries and were pronounced dead.

The two victims were identified as Harold E. Switzer Jr., 49, of Belvidere, and Harold Switzer III, 26, of Belvidere.

The right lane of traffic was closed at midnight and all lanes were closed briefly at around 2 a.m. for the traffic crash investigation. The roadway was reopened at 5 a.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
