Russell D. Brengman, 52, of McHenry.

A 52-year-old man has been charged after he forced his way into a home near Antioch while armed with a machete and gun and then battered a child and man.

Russell D. Brengman, 52, of the 4900 block of Pioneer Road in McHenry, was charged with two counts of home invasion, two counts of aggravated domestic battery, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a firearm with a FOID card.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 10:30 a.m. Friday to the 25400 block of West Route 173 in unincorporated Antioch.

Deputies spoke to two victims, a 20-year-old man and a 13-year-old girl, who said that a relative of theirs, who does not live at the residence, forced his way into their home.

The relative, identified as Russell D. Brengman, 52, of the 4900 block of Pioneer Road in McHenry, was allegedly armed with a rifle and machete during the incident, according to Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli.

Brengman allegedly struck the 20-year-old man several times with the blunt end of the machete and also struck him several times with the barrel of the rifle.

Brengman accused the 20-year-old of stealing a cell phone from him, Covelli said, adding that Brengman also struck the 13-year-old girl with the rifle.

The 20-year-old man was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The 13-year-old victim did not require hospitalization.

Brengman fled the scene but sheriff’s deputies located him at a construction worksite in the 26200 block of West Channel Avenue in unincorporated Antioch.

He was taken into custody without incident. Both the rifle and machete were located and collected as evidence.

Brengman remains held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing Friday morning.
