A 23-year-old Waukegan man died after apparently being stabbed in the chest in the middle of the street in Zion Monday morning.

The Zion Police Department responded around 5:01 a.m. Monday to the 2600 block of Gilboa Avenue in Zion for a report of a man down and not breathing.

Responding officers located a 23-year old Waukegan man lying in the street with a puncture wound to his chest.

Zion Police Chief Kirk Henderson said that officers began CPR and requested an ambulance from the Zion Fire and Rescue Department.

The man was transported to Vista Medical Center East where he was pronounced dead at 5:37 a.m.

Henderson said the name of the victim is not being released pending notification to the victim’s family. The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the hospital and is scheduling an autopsy.

The Zion Police Department is conducting an investigation into the incident and the Lake County Major Crime Task Force is assisting with evidence collection.

“This is an active investigation and detectives and evidence technicians remain at the scene,” Henderson said Monday morning.
