Police officers arrested a 33-year-old man after they found an illegal loaded gun in his possession during a traffic stop in Zion.

Andrew Ayers, 33, of Zion, was taken into custody on Monday in the 1500 block of 27th Street in Zion.

The Zion Police Department said that Ayers was a passenger in a vehicle that had been stopped for a traffic violation.

The driver, Tania D. Barnes, 18, of Zion, was arrested for driving while license revoked and a tow truck was called for her car.

She was also charged with operating an uninsured motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration.

An illegally possessed firearm — a MasterPiece Arms semi-automatic 9mm — was discovered by officers during an inventory search before the vehicle was towed. The firearm was loaded.

Ayers was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon no FOID, a class 2 felony. He was taken before a bond court judge on Tuesday where his bond was set at $250,000.
