Firefighters responded Tuesday morning to Oak Crest School in Beach Park after smoke and flames were seen coming from the roof of the building.
The Beach Park Fire Department responded around 7:31 a.m. Tuesday to Oak Crest Elementary School, 38550 North Lewis Avenue, for a report of a structure fire.
Firefighters arrived within two minutes of being dispatched and found smoke and flames coming from the roof area. The fire was quickly brought under control.
The building department was called to the scene and firefighters conducted overhaul and checked for additional hot spots.
Several area fire departments, including Waukegan, Gurnee, Zion, Winthrop Harbor and Pleasant Prairie, also responded to the scene.
Officials said that the school was undergoing major renovations at the time of the fire, which is believed to have possibly been started from a heating and cooling unit on the roof.
No one was injured during the fire. A damage estimate was not immediately available.
According to Beach Park School District 3, Oak Crest School was undergoing renovations that included roofing, plumbing, painting, and electrical work, among several other changes.
