A 65-year-old woman is in grave condition and not expected to survive after her head was impaled by a spike during a scooter crash near Mundelein.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Countryside Fire Protection District responded around 1:20 p.m. Wednesday to the 26200 block of North Route 83 in unincorporated Mundelein for a traffic crash.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located a 65-year-old Mundelein woman with critical injuries.
Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli said that a preliminary investigation showed the female was operating a 2009 Motofino Scooter.
The woman was leaving the parking lot of the manufactured homes when — for an unknown reason — she drove slightly off the pavement.
This caused her to fall off the scooter and strike her head on a railroad tie, which was acting as a barrier between the pavement and grass, Covelli said.
The railroad tie had a spike protruding, which impaled the woman.
She was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with critical injuries and remains in grave condition.
Covelli said Thursday morning that the woman is not expected to survive.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story reported that the victim was 70 years old and a resident of Waukegan. Police now say she is actually 65 years old and a resident of Mundelein.
