Santos B. Vasquez-Diaz, 35, of McHenry.

A McHenry man was arrested after police say he strangled his wife until she began losing consciousness while her infant son was pinned underneath her.

Santos B. Vasquez-Diaz, 35, of the 4500 block of Garden Quarter Road in McHenry, was charged with aggravated domestic battery, two counts of unlawful restraint, three counts of domestic battery, interfering with the reporting of domestic violence and causing a child to be endangered.

According to a criminal complaint filed in McHenry County court, Vasquez-Diaz pushed his wife onto their bed while she was holding her infant son.

The infant fell and was pinned to the bed underneath the woman while Vasquez-Diaz was on top of them, according to the complaint.

Vasquez-Diaz placed his knees against the woman’s chest and strangled the woman until she was no longer able to breathe and began to lose consciousness, the complaint said.

During the attack, which occurred on Sunday, Vasquez-Diaz threatened to kill the woman and her child, the complaint says.

Vasquez-Diaz also allegedly pushed his car key into the throat of the woman and took her phone away when she tried calling 911.

McHenry Police Department Public Affairs Officer Patrick Polidori said that the victim was transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry.

The woman experienced difficulty breathing, pain, bruising and red marks.

She was treated and later released from the hospital, Polidori said, adding that the infant was not injured.

Vasquez-Diaz remains held in the McHenry County jail on a $100,000 bond and will appear in court on Friday.
