A Chicago man died shortly after being shot at the Motel 6 in Waukegan early Wednesday morning, police said.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday to the Motel 6, 31 North Green Bay Road, for a report of a shooting.

Waukegan Police Commander Joe Florip said that shots were fired and officers located a male victim that appeared to be shot.

The victim was transported by ambulance to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, Florip said.

Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper said that the victim is a 32-year-old Chicago man. An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

The man’s name will be released after his family is notified of his death, Cooper said.

No one is in custody and no suspect information is available, Florip said, adding “This case is considered an open and active homicide investigation.”
