An apartment complex in Gurnee was evacuated and a SWAT team was called after a gunshot was accidentally fired during an argument, police said.

The Gurnee Police Department responded around 9:30 a.m. Monday to the area of Greenhaven Lane and Brookhaven Road for a call of a single gunshot heard inside an apartment complex.

Officers were able to determine the location of the shooting based on witness statements, according to Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor.

A perimeter was established around the building to help contain the situation.

Officers evacuated nearby apartments and notified area businesses and schools of the situation as a precaution, Gaylor said.

The Northern Illinois Police Alarm System Emergency Services Team was called to assist with clearing the scene.

A man and woman exited the apartment a short time later and both were detained. The 21-year-old Gurnee man was questioned by detectives.

It was determined he held a valid FOID card. Gaylor said that the man accidentally fired one round during an argument with others.

The other people involved in the argument left before police arrived. No injuries were reported.

The man and woman have been released from custody. The woman will not be charged but charges are possible against the man pending further investigation, Gaylor said.

Area residents, businesses and schools were notified they could resume their activities following the incident. The case remains under investigation.
