A 28-year-old man has died following a drive-by shooting that left three others, including an 8-year-old, shot Sunday morning in Zion.

The Zion Police Department responded around 12:57 a.m. Sunday to the 2300 block of Joppa Avenue for a 911 call of shots fired.

Officers responded and located four people shot, according to Zion Police Chief Kirk Henderson.

A 28-year old Zion man suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and a second 28-year old Zion man also had a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

An 8-year old Zion boy suffered a gunshot wound to the hand and a fourth victim, a 35-year old Zion man, had a gunshot wound to his shoulder and leg.

A friend transported the 35-year-old man to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where he was treated and released.

Family members transported the 8-year old to Vista Medical Center East where he was treated and released, Henderson said.

One of the 28-year-olds later died around 11:30 p.m. Sunday. An autopsy has been scheduled on him for Monday morning by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

The initial investigation indicates that a newer model, dark-colored SUV occupied by at least three subjects, drove by and both the front and backseat passengers fired at the adult victims as they were standing outside the residence.

The 8-year old was struck when one of the rounds penetrated the residence and struck him in his bedroom, Henderson said.

Officers located fifteen .223 caliber spent shell casings, six .40 caliber shell casings and six 9mm shell casings. Officers also recovered two loaded 9mm handguns at the scene.
