A 19-year-old man suffered critical injuries after he crashed his car into a tree while traveling at a high rate of speed in Long Grove on Wednesday, police said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Long Grove Fire Protection District responded around 2:35 p.m. Wednesday to the area of Route 22 and Old McHenry Road in Long Grove for a traffic crash with injuries.

Sheriffโ€™s deputies arrived and located a single-vehicle crash involving a red Honda sedan.

The driver, a 19-year-old Chicago Heights man, was traveling southbound on Old McHenry Road north of Route 22, Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli said.

The driver lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree on the west side of the roadway. The man was trapped inside the car and had to be extricated by firefighters.

Witnesses reported the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to losing control, Covelli said.

He was transported by ambulance to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in unincorporated Barrington with critical injuries. His condition was later upgraded to serious but stable condition.

Southbound Old McHenry Road was closed for approximately four hours while crash investigators conducted their investigation.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriffโ€™s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
