A family has been displaced after their home in Winthrop Harbor became fully engulfed in flames early Saturday morning, officials said.

The Winthrop Harbor Fire Department responded around 4:57 a.m. Saturday to the area of 9th Street and Kirkwood Avenue for a reported structure fire.

Firefighters arrived to find a fully engulfed one-story residence in the 800 block of Kirkwood Avenue.

A vehicle parked in the driveway of the home also caught fire and was destroyed.

Fire officials said that the residents, a mother and her son, were able to escape safely because of the working smoke alarms that woke them up.

No firefighters or residents were injured in the blaze.

Beach Park, Pleasant Prairie, Zion, Waukegan, Gurnee, and Newport fire departments assisted at the scene. North Chicago and Kenosha firefighters covered Winthrop Harbor’s calls during the fire.
