A gunman fatally shot an 18-year-old man playing basketball and injured a 77-year-old woman who was gardening Sunday evening in North Chicago.
The North Chicago Police Department and North Chicago Fire Department responded around 7:15 p.m. Sunday to the 2000 block of Greenfield Avenue for a report of shots fired.
Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli said that officers arrived and located an 18-year-old North Chicago man shot.
The man, who was playing basketball in the roadway, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
A 77-year-old North Chicago woman was gardening in her yard at the time of the shooting and was struck in the leg by a stray bullet.
She was transported to an area hospital and expected to survive her injury, Covelli said.
A preliminary investigation shows the gunman exited a vehicle, shot several times, then got back into the vehicle and fled.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and an autopsy on the 18-year-old has been scheduled for Wednesday.
The North Chicago Police Department requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force to assist with the investigation.
North Chicago police detectives and Task Force investigators continue to investigate and search for the gunman.
