A 36-year-old homeless man was struck and killed Friday evening on Belvidere Road in Waukegan, police and community members said.
The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 10:40 p.m. Friday to the 2100 block of Belvidere Road for a report of a vehicle that struck a pedestrian.
Officers located a pedestrian in the westbound lanes of the roadway that had been struck by a vehicle. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 2014 Chrysler 300 was traveling westbound on Belvidere Road when it struck the pedestrian, identified as a man in his 30s from Waukegan, who was in the roadway.
Waukegan Police Commander Joe Florip said that the Chrysler stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.
The driver of the vehicle, a Waukegan man in his 20s, was not issued any citations and submitted to blood-alcohol level testing and drug testing. Florip said that the driver was not injured.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office has scheduled an autopsy on the man for Tuesday.
Community members told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the victim was 36-year-old Amelio Delgado-Ursino.
Delgado was homeless and stayed in the Waukegan area. His mother, who lives in Mexico, is in poor health and a fundraiser has been started to help raise money to send Delgado’s body back to Mexico.
The GoFundMe account has raised $500 of its $5,000 goal so far.
