Authorities have identified an 18-year-old man who was shot and killed while playing basketball last weekend in North Chicago.

An autopsy showed that Sulayman Little, 18, of North Chicago, died of injuries sustained from a gunshot wound, according to Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper.

The North Chicago Police Department and North Chicago Fire Department responded around 7:15 p.m. September 6 to the 2000 block of Greenfield Avenue for a report of shots fired.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli said that officers arrived and located Little, who had been shot.

The man, who was playing basketball in the roadway, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

A preliminary investigation shows the gunman exited a vehicle, shot several times, then got back into the vehicle and fled.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and conducted an autopsy on Little on Wednesday.

The North Chicago Police Department requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force to assist with the investigation.

A GoFundMe account was started for Little’s mother, Kamilah Little, who is a single parent. The fundraised has collected nearly $9,000 for funeral costs and other expenses.

“She is doing her best to cope during this difficult time. No mother should have to bury a child prematurely,” Kamilah Little’s sister said in the GoFundMe post.

North Chicago police detectives and Task Force investigators continue to investigate and search for the gunman.
