The coroner’s office has identified a 28-year-old man who died after being shot at Motel 6 in Waukegan on Tuesday. It was the second homicide to occur at the motel in less than two weeks.

An autopsy showed that John K. Cannon, 28, of Waukegan, died of injuries sustained from gunshot wounds, according to Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper.

“We have been in close contact with Mr. Cannonโ€™s family and our deepest condolences go out to them during this difficult time. This is truly a tragedy,” Cooper said.

The Waukegan Police Department responded around 1 a.m. Tuesday to a local hospital for a report of two people who showed up at the hospital with gunshot wounds.

Officers located two gunshot victims, one of them identified as Cannon, in the emergency room. Cannon later died from his injuries and the second man was reported to be in serious but stable condition.

Waukegan Police Commander Joe Florip said that the victim in serious condition is a man in his 20s from North Chicago.

The shooting occurred at the Motel 6, 31 North Green Bay Road in Waukegan. Photos from the scene showed numerous evidence markers near a car in the parking lot.

Detectives with the Waukegan Police Department Criminal Investigations Division are investigating the incident. The motive behind the shooting is unclear, Florip said.

The Waukegan Police Department said they do not believe there is a threat to the community and will release additional information when it is available.

Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper has scheduled an autopsy for the deceased man on Wednesday. Once the autopsy is complete and family notifications have been made, the victim’s identity will be released.

Less than two weeks prior to the Tuesday shooting, police responded to the same motel for a call of a shooting around 4:30 a.m. August 26

Florip said that shots were fired and officers located a male victim that appeared to be shot.

The victim was transported by ambulance to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, Florip said.

Cooper said that the victim was identified as Jerry Reid, 32, of Joilet. However, Waukegan police say the man was from Chicago and it is unclear which city he actually resided in.

Anyone with information on either shooting is asked to contact the Waukegan Police Departmentโ€™s Criminal Investigations Division at 847-360-9001.
