A 21-year-old woman was fatally shot early Sunday morning at a residence in Gurnee and a 19-year-old man has been charged in connection with her death.

Isaiah J. Cole, 19, of Gurnee, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, possession of a stolen firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm without a FOID card, three counts of unlawful possession of a control substance, and two counts of unlawful possession of cannabis.

The Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 12:10 a.m. Sunday to the 600 block of Creekside Circle for a report of a person shot.

Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor said that officers found Ameyah T. Brewton, 21, of Gurnee, inside the residence with at least one gunshot wound.

Officers immediately began CPR on the woman until paramedics arrived at the scene.

Paramedics transported Brewton to Advocate Condell Medical Center where she later was pronounced dead.

Officers determined Cole shot Brewton inside the residence, Gaylor said. Cole was taken into custody by responding officers inside the home.

Gurnee police detectives collected witness statements and interviewed the suspect regarding the case. Detectives learned that Cole and Brewton were in a domestic relationship.

Gaylor called the shooting an isolated incident and said that assistance was provided at the scene by the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force.

No further details were released Sunday regarding the shooting. Cole’s booking photo and court details were not immediately available.
