Jimy Tenorio, 34, and Christian Tenorio, 36, both of Waukegan.

Police said in an update that two brothers, who were armed with a gun, forced their way into a woman’s home in Waukegan on Tuesday before being shot dead by a neighbor who heard the victim yelling for help.

The Waukegan Police Department responded around 10 a.m. Tuesday to the 100 block of North Frolic Avenue for a report of a burglary in progress call.

Investigators believe that Christian Tenorio, 36, and Jimy Tenorio, 34, both of Waukegan, arrived at the single-family home to confront a person they believed was inside the home.

Christian and Jimy, who are brothers, arrived at the home and knocked on the door, according to Waukegan Police Department Cmdr. Joe Florip.

A woman in her 30s, who rents the home, answered the door and both suspects forced their way into the home.

Christian displayed a loaded revolver handgun at the victim. She began to yell for help and a man in his 30s, who rents the basement, heard the commotion.

He went upstairs with a loaded semi-automatic pistol and confronted the Tenorio brothers before shooting Christian, Florip said.

Jimy retrieved the loaded revolver handgun and dragged Christian out of the home.

The male resident retreated and returned with a loaded assault-style rifle, Florip said, adding that the male resident and Jimy then exchanged gunfire.

Both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene in the front yard of the home. The female victim was babysitting a smaller toddler and a small three-pound dog at the time of the incident.

None of the residents or the toddler were injured. The dog ran out the front door during the incident but has since been found and returned safely.

A third person who lives in the home was not at the residence during the shooting.

Investigators determined the home was the intended target of the incident but the three residents of the home were unsure why the two suspects would have targeted them, Florip said.

Both residents involved in the incident have valid FOID cards. Neither Tenorio possessed a valid FOID.

Police are still investigating and the case is considered open and active. The case will be presented to the Lake County Stateโ€™s Attorneyโ€™s Office for review once the investigation is completed.
